The entire verse is:
Trust in the Lord with all your heart, and do not lean to your own understanding; in all your ways acknowledge Him, and He shall direct your paths (Proverbs 3:5-6).
Let’s do a breakdown of words:
Trust- We have hope and confidence in God. And hope does not put us to shame, because God’s love has been poured out into our hearts through the Holy Spirit, who has been given to us (Romans 5:5). Hope does not disappoint us because we have God’s love.
Now this is the confidence that we have in Him, that if we ask anything according to His will, He hears us. And if we know that He hears us, whatever we ask, we know that we have the petitions that we have asked of Him (1 John 5:14-15). The confidence that we have is our deep trust in God, believing every Word to be true. And with that being true, it is absolutely necessary not to lean to your own understanding.
Why?
Because God’s way and thoughts are higher than ours: “For My thoughts are not your thoughts, nor are your ways My ways,” says the Lord. For as the heavens are higher than the earth, so are My ways higher than your ways, and My thoughts than your thoughts (Isaiah 55:8-9). Brothers and sisters, this is where many Christians miss the mark when they lean to their own understanding. This verse lets us know that there are two perspectives; God’s and ours. Although we are living in a natural environment, our Father wants us to think like He thinks. After all this world is not our real home
These all died in faith, not having received the promises, but having seen them afar off were assured of them, embraced them, and confessed that they were strangers and pilgrims on the earth. For those who say such things declare plainly that they seek a homeland. And truly if they had called to mind that country from which they had come out, they would have had opportunity to return. But now they desire a better, that is, a heavenly country. Therefore, God is not ashamed to be called their God, for He has prepared a city for them (Hebrews 11:13-16).
For our citizenship is in heaven, from which we also eagerly wait for the Savior, the Lord Jesus Christ (Philippians 3:20). With that being said, we must think about who we really are and where we really will be soon; that will give us a better mindset.
Always acknowledge the Lord God - To acknowledge God, begin your day with prayer; during that time ask for instructions for whatever you are involved in on that day. Read and study the Word of God, not trying to reason things out on your own. Regardless of your decisions, allow the Word of God to have first place.; always desire His will for your life, rather than your own will. Model Jesus: Now in the morning, having risen a long while
before daylight, He went out and departed to a solitary place; and there He prayed (Mark 1:35).
He will direct your paths. When you follow these directives, you’re allowing the Word and the
Holy Spirit to be your guide; and then, He will direct your paths (Psalm 119:105).
We should acknowledge our helplessness without Jesus Christ. “I am the vine, you are the branches. He who abides in Me, and I in him, bears much fruit; for without Me you can do nothing." (John 15:5).
