If you have taken any medicine at all, it is known that they have side effects, and they can be very harmful, dangerous, and sometimes they have been known to cause cessation of life. This is a follow-up or piggyback from yesterday’s message about the ABC’S of Christianity. If the basics are not taught, it causes one to be subject to anything that comes along, because they didn’t start off properly on the foundation.

If you want to live a long and healthy physical and spiritual life, God has Biblical instructions that are beneficial. The following verses are from Proverbs, a book of wisdom  written by Solomon; who learned from his past mistakes and bad choices.

A father ‘s wise instruction to his son (children): Hear, my children, the instruction of a father, and give attention to know understanding; for I give you good doctrine:

Do not forsake my law.  When I was my father’s son, tender and the only one in the sight of my mother,  He also taught me and said to me: Let your heart retain my words; keep my commands, and live. Get wisdom! Get understanding! Do not forget, nor turn away from the words of my mouth.  Do not forsake her, and she will preserve you; love her, and she will keep you. Wisdom is the principal thing; therefore, get wisdom. And in all your getting, get understanding (Proverbs 4:1-7).

My son, give attention to my words; incline your ear to my sayings. Do not let them depart from your eyes; keep them in the midst of your heart; for they are life to those who find them, and health to all their flesh. Keep your heart with all diligence, for out of it spring the issues of life (Proverbs 4:20-23).

For length of days and long life and peace they will add to you. Let not mercy and truth forsake you; bind them around your neck, write them on the tablet of your heart, and so find favor and high esteem in the sight of God and man.

Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways acknowledge Him, and He shall direct your paths (Proverbs 3:2-6).

This is another scripture that connects, relates to, and supports: Bind them continually upon your heart; tie them around your neck (Proverbs 6:21).

After all of Solomon’s folly, he was determined to write to warn others as a loving father would do to his children. This was so serious that Solomon continued to put emphasis on his instructions. We don’t literally tie the Word around our neck, but it should be so strong in our hearts.

The key to good health and long life is to listen attentively to God’s Word and obey God’s Word; follow the directions (instructions) as you would on the medicine bottle. You will be guaranteed long life and lengthy days because the Word God is medicine and it does not have side effects.

It is known that some of God’s people’s lives have been cut short; whatever the reason, only God knows. However, we should follow His instructions and not lean to our own understanding.
