Being a Good Sport

Who’s Side are You On? 10-5-24

Many of us have favorite sports teams, that we support. I know of people who decide to drop that particular team, when they are on a losing streak.

This week, I had had the opportunity to minister in ways that the people didn’t understand it was ministry. For instance, a banner was hung on my door and someone asked me why did I waste my money on the Eagles.

I said this: “If you were my friend and made mistakes, do you think I would write you off” (kick you to the curb), or if you did something I did not like? He said, no. Then I told him that’s the way I feel about the Philadelphia Eagles; no one wins all the time. If there were true, we would be perfect, and there are no perfect people on this earth.

I have been a fan of the Eagles for many years, before my beloved sister (she passed in 2009) was a fan of the infamous Dallas Cowboys. So far, this season the Cowboys and the Eagles have lost two games and they have won two games.

My story

I was blessed with a bunch of Eagles’ gear.  A couple of my nieces brought several items for me, and this really made me happy because of the love they have expressed in various ways and especially when it comes to the Philadelphia Eagles, my favorite team.

I don’t have children, but my nieces are a blessing to me. I will not share names; they know who they are. In addition to the nieces who blessed me with some of the Eagles’ gear, those along with a few others have been there for me. They have blessed me with many gifts, but love and respect for their Aunt Betty, has been exceptional.

Now, to my favorite part: Who’s side (team) am I really on? I am on the Lord’s side because His team (people) don’t lose. He disarmed the rulers and authorities and put them to open shame, by triumphing over them in him (Colossians 2:15).

We are more than conquerors through Christ Jesus who loved us and gave His life for us.  Jesus defeated the devils, so can we. Who shall separate us from the love of Christ? Shall tribulation, or distress, or persecution, or famine, or nakedness, or peril, or sword? As it is written: “For Your sake we are killed all day long; we are accounted as sheep for the slaughter.” Yet in all these things we are more than conquerors through Him who loved us (Romans 8:35-37).

I want to say this, when Christ suffered and died on the cross, it seemed as though he lost, but HE got up out of the grave and defeated Satan (the opposing team). So, being in this world, sometimes it looks like we are losers, but when the enemy comes against us, it makes us stronger. We learn what their tactics are and come back full force to defeat the opposing team.
