Encouraging Others 1-15-25

Betty A. Burnett

Loving, helping, and encouraging others are connected; if we love someone, we will help them, and helping them is encouraging. So here we have  a threefold formula, or recipe. Putting them all together will cause us to be the servants God called us to be.

These are some of the do’s and don’ts when it comes to how we treat (encourage) others.

1)      Therefore comfort each other and edify one another, just as you also are doing (1 Thessalonians 5:11). and to esteem them very highly in love for their work's sake. Be at peace among yourselves (1 Thessalonians 5:11, 13).

2)      But I do not want you to be ignorant, brethren, concerning those who have fallen asleep, lest you sorrow as others who have no hope.  For if we believe that Jesus died and rose again, even so God will bring with Him those who sleep in Jesus. For this we say to you by the word of the Lord, that we who are alive and remain until the coming of the Lord will by no means precede those who are asleep.

For the Lord Himself will descend from heaven with a shout, with the voice of an archangel, and with the trumpet of God. And the dead in Christ will rise first. Then we who are alive and remain shall be caught up together with them in the clouds to meet the Lord in the air. And thus, we shall always be with the Lord. Therefore comfort one another with these words (1 Thessalonians 4:13-18).

It is such a blessing to comfort (encourage those who are going through the loss of a loved one.

3)      Also, when someone is going through different situations and challenges, we can comfort/encourage them. Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of mercies and God of all comfort, who comforts us in all our tribulation, that we may be able to comfort those who are in any trouble, with the comfort with which we ourselves are

comforted by God (2 Corinthians 1:3-4).

All of us have been through something, therefore, we can use our experiences to encourage others, instead of forgetting where we came from or have been delivered from.

The scriptures warn us as to what not to do

1)      Now we exhort you, brethren, warn those who are unruly, comfort the fainthearted, uphold the weak, be patient with all. See that no one renders evil for evil to anyone but always pursue what is good both for yourselves and for all (1 Thessalonians 5:14-15).

2)      For I say, through the grace given to me, to everyone who is among you, not to think of himself more highly than he ought to think, but to think soberly, as God has dealt to each one a measure of faith (Romans 12:3).

Paul states in another scripture -  But by the grace of God I am what I am, and His grace toward me was not in vain; but I labored more abundantly than they all, yet not I, but the grace of God which was with me.  Therefore, whether it was I or they, so we preach and so you believed (1 Corinthians 15:10-11).

If you are in the DO category, praise the Lord for your humility.

However, if you are in the DON’T category, you don’t understand agape love, which is to love unconditionally, you don’t understand what it means to encourage others; you forgot where you came from, and you will not look down on someone unless you’re picking them up. When these things are still a part of your life, you certainly do not understand God’s grace!
