As I begin the message, there are some things that should be made clear about Psalm fifty-one, it is about David’s sinful adulterous act with Bathsheba and his murderous act against her husband, Uriah. The verses can be found in 2 Samuel, chapter eleven.
David’s prayer of repentance:
Purge me with hyssop, and I shall be clean; wash me, and I shall be whiter than snow. Make me hear joy and gladness, that the bones You have broken may rejoice. Hide Your face from my sins, and blot out all my iniquities. Create in me a clean heart, O God, and renew a steadfast spirit within me. Do not cast me away from Your presence, and do not take Your Holy Spirit from me.

Let’s compare the sins of David to our sins under the new and better covenant (New Testament). Sin is sin, but under a new and better covenant the Spirit of God lives in us, whereas He did not live in the Old Testament saints. When David asked the Lord not to take His Spirit from him, it was because the Spirit would anoint priests, prophets, and kings for special tasks. Because of his sinful actions, David must have felt that the Spirit would not come upon him with the anointing to do what was necessary in his role (position) as king.
There are a few words I want to put emphasis on and give the meaning of them.
Purge [cleanse] me with hyssop
Blot out [erase] all my iniquities [sins]– sea of forgetfulness
Create [make] in me a clean heart
Do not cast [throw] me away from Your presence
This is crucial: Old Testament
David was talking to the Lord from the old covenant view. Jesus came and changed all of that. Under the new and better covenant (New Testament). Every born again believer is graced with the anointing to function in their specific call.
1) Hyssop was used for cleansing and healing – New Testament connection: That he might sanctify and cleanse it with the washing of water by the word (Ephesians 5:26). That to me means a physical healing which can connect with being healed by Jesus’ stripes (Isaiah 53:5, 1 Peter 2:24)
2) But if we walk in the light as He is in the light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus Christ His Son cleanses us from all sin. If we say that we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us. If we confess our sins, He is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness (1 John 1:7-9).
3) We have a clean heart once we are born again- And such were some of you. But you were washed, but you were sanctified, but you were justified in the name of the Lord Jesus and by the Spirit of our God (1 Corinthians 6:11).
4) God is always with us – never leave or forsake us: Deuteronomy 31:8; Matthew 28:20; Hebrews 13:5.

Friends, the only thing for us that connects with David’s prayer is confessing and repenting ; we have been cleansed by the precious blood of Jesus (1 John 1:7). In essence, Jesus makes a difference.

Jesus took care of our past, present and future sins, we will not stand before the Judgment Seat of Christ for our sins; we
will be judged for our works our assignment, stewardship. That’s why it is important to know what God has specifically called you to do.
