The book about the "Correct Thing" was an important part of history that should not be forgotten. Charlotte Hawkins Brown, the author used her three nieces who were students at Palmer Memorial Institute as example and role models to the other students. One of the nieces made a statement:
“Every generation has its own ideas of what is or is not socially acceptable, but the rules of contact in the world’s society still demand a “Good Taste” So far, I have mentioned good morals, but what about Christians? What is required all of God’s children when it comes to living by His standard. As Christians we are to take and adopt the same stance.

I will take it a step further in my early teen years and teenage years, we could not dress in a way that would bring attention to ourselves in an immoral way. Yet, the generations have changed and the ways of the world have enormous influence. I agree with the statement about “Good taste”- because it seems like each generation weakens to, are seduced and enticed by the things of the world.
Many of the younger generation have no idea how to carry themselves. They definitely do not respect their elders or anyone else. Lord have mercy when it comes what they wear. Most of their body is revealed; both male and female, and nobody is teaching (mentoring) them, or they are not open to correction.
And what is worse, they have the audacity to come into the house of worship that is disrespectful to the Lord and to true Christians. And there are churches who say: “The Bible says, come as you are” That depends on how it is conveyed and how it is received.
For instance, if someone desires to attend church, but may not have the proper attire, then please go to church; as you continue to grow in Christ, you won’t have the same desires you used to do; words that are not edifying will not proceed out of you mouth. You will definitely change the way you dress, because you want to act like a real gentleman and lady.

It seems highly likely that Charlotte Hawkins Brown had some good moral upbringing that fell right in line with the Word God. What she taught her students reminds me of a verse about the older women mentoring the younger ones as well as the men.
But as for you, speak the things which are proper for sound doctrine: that the older men be sober, reverent, temperate, sound in faith, in love, in patience; the older women likewise, that they be reverent in behavior, not slanderers, not given to much wine, teachers of good things that they admonish the young women to love their husbands, to love their children, to be discreet, chaste, homemakers, good, obedient to their own husbands, that the word of God may not be blasphemed.
[I believe the older women are to help all the young women, whether married or single, as well as older men training the younger men, developing them stronger in the faith, which causes the men and women to live according to God’s standard].
Likewise, exhort the young men to be sober-minded, in all things showing yourself to be a pattern of good works; in doctrine showing integrity, reverence, incorruptibility, sound speech that cannot be condemned, that one who is an opponent may be ashamed, having nothing evil to say of you (Titus 2:1-8).
In addition to the scripture in Titus, this one says: I desire therefore that the men pray everywhere, lifting up holy hands, without wrath and doubting; in like manner also, that the women adorn themselves in modest apparel, with propriety and moderation, not with braided hair or gold or pearls or costly clothing, but which is proper for women professing godliness, with good works (1 Timothy 2:8-10).
In essence the scripture means not to take all that unnecessary time getting beautified to draw attention from others. We cannot use the excuse such as “This is a new day, and things have changed because each generation changes, which is true; but the Word of God never changes. Thank the Lord for people who still live by the godly standard and refuse to embrace the world’s way of doing things.
