Generational Curses? 7-13-26

“I am Free!”

I hear so many people talk about generational curses when it comes to Christians and how they are passed from different generations. But does what they say line up with the Word of God?

The curse started with Adam when he disobeyed God. but of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil you shall not eat, for in the day that you eat of it you shall surely die. (Genesis 2:17). And it continued throughout the Old Testament. One scripture I was still use is in Deuteronomy 28- about blessings for being obedient and curses when thee people were disobedient.

I stand on the principle because the more we obey God the greater blessings are ours. However, there are consequences to being disobedient, but under the new and better covenant, we have been set free by Jesus Christ.

We inherited Adam’s sin, but not sickness. Therefore, just as through one man sin entered the world, and death through sin, and thus death spread to all men, because all sinned (Romans 5:12).

But the prophet Ezekiel wrote prophetically (futuristic) in chapter 18:20-22.  The soul who sins shall die. The son shall not bear the guilt of the father, nor the father bear the guilt of the son. The righteousness of the righteous shall be upon himself, and the wickedness of the wicked shall be upon himself.

“But if a wicked man turns from all his sins which he has committed, keeps all My statutes, and does what is lawful and right, he shall surely live; he shall not die.  None of the transgressions which he has committed shall be remembered against him; because of the righteousness which he has done, he shall live.

This means personal accountability – “Every tub has to stand on its own bottom” In other words everyone has to give account to God for him or her self. So, then each of us shall give account of himself to God (Romans 14:12).

From what the Word of God says, why do so many of His people believe that they are cursed? Because we live in a cursed world ruled by Satan (John 14:30, 2 Corinthians 4:4), we are affected by the curse. For instance, various diseases come upon us, yet we are not cursed.

We do inherit sicknesses and whatever we are surrounded with affects us, but we are not cursed. Remember this, sickness is not a sin but it is the result of Adam’s sin. If Jesus came to set us free (John 8:32, 36), we can not be cursed. Christ has redeemed us from the curse of the law, having become a curse for us, for it is written, “Cursed is everyone who hangs on a tree” (Galatians 3:13).

If you have really been redeemed why do you say there are generational curses? Remember this, the Bible says the curse comes from sin, but sickness is the result of this sinful world we live in. We are not bearing the sins of our forefathers.

You might ask, why did I inherit high blood pressure and so on because one of my parents had it? Inheriting sickness is a vast difference from inheriting someone’s sins. . Jesus took care of sickness too (Isaiah 53:3-5, 1 Peter 2:24); by His stripes we are healed.
