David Defeated Goliath But Lost to Bathsheba. Our Real Giants are the Desires We Haven’t Killed Yet 10-26-24
One would think that since David defeated Goliath he could overcome and challenge, but that didn’t happen. It was obvious that David had not kill his fleshly desire. It seems as though David’s son Solomon took on his traits. And he had seven hundred wives, princesses, and three hundred concubines; and his wives turned away his heart (1 Kings 11:3).
[Christianity] taken from the internet - In the Bible, a concubine was a woman acquired by a man as a secondary wife. Her purpose was to provide a male heir in the case of a barren wife, to provide more children in general to enhance the family’s workforce and wealth, and to satisfy the man’s sexual desires. A concubine was endowed with rights and protections by Hebrew law but was not equal in status to a wife.
It is a fact that Jesus hung on the tree (cross) and became a curse for us. Christ has redeemed us from the curse of the law, having become a curse for us (for it is written, “Cursed is everyone who hangs on a tree”), (Galatians 3:13). That tells us that under grace there is no curse, but we are surrounded by the curse because of the fallen (sinful) world we live in.
Let’s get to the point at hand. A man can look on the beauty of a woman and it can change his entire way of thinking. Paul had flesh issues because he wrote about them. He describes what a flesh issue means. For I know that in me (that is, in my flesh) nothing good dwells; for to will is present with me, but how to perform what is good I do not find. For the good that I will do, I do not do; but the evil I will not do, that I practice. Now if I do what I will not to do, it is no longer I who do it, but sin that dwells in me (Romans 7:18-20).
Paul had stated that the sin was in the flesh; the Spirit man was perfect as soon as we were saved; and the soul is being worked on (practicing to do better every day), and the flesh will never be saved while we’re on this earth.
I am not singling out men, but the topic is referring to David; all of us have flesh problems that need to be killed. Mortify therefore your members which are upon the earth; fornication, uncleanness, inordinate affection, evil concupiscence, and covetousness, which is idolatry (Colossians 3:5).
But I discipline my body and bring it into subjection, lest, when I have preached to others, I myself should become disqualified (1 Corinthians 9:27). Although we still have issues with the flesh, we don’t want to be a stumbling block to others. Therefore, we should do whatever possible to avoid yielding to our flesh, because there are severe consequences.
